What a wonderful day we had on Thursday, 5th March, as the entire school community went on a “Bear Hunt”!
This year, we moved away from the noise and bustle of traditional costumes to focus on a calm, inclusive, and deeply sensory exploration of Michael Rosen’s classic story. It was a joy to see our students so regulated, engaged, and immersed in the “Journey of the Five Senses.”
Sensory Wonders in Phase 1 & 2
Our younger learners in Phase 1 and 2 truly brought the story to life through tactile exploration. From rustling through “long wavy grass” mats to squeezing mess-free “oozy mud” squish bags, the classrooms were full of discovery.
A special mention must go to M@LAD, who delivered a truly wonderful whole-satellite sensory story. Using coordinated scents, sounds, and textures to ensure every student could access the magic of the book at their own pace. You may even spot a special visitor in the picture!
Creativity in Motion: Drama & Computing
The “Bear Hunt” didn’t stop at textures! We saw some incredible stop-motion animation projects where students used Chromebooks to film parts of the story.
In our drama sessions, the repetitive refrains of “Over it, under it, through it” were accompanied by beautiful actions and signing. These digital retellings allowed us to share our successes across the school without the sensory demand of a large assembly.
Taking the Hunt Outdoors
The adventure even extended beyond the school gates! Phase 4 @LAW took their learning on the road, completing a Bear Hunt during their community outing. It was fantastic to see them applying their sequencing skills and “searching” for the bear in a real-world setting.
Thank you to all the staff for their creative planning and to our parents and carers for supporting our “no-costume” policy. By keeping things predictable and calm, we ensured that World Book Day was a meaningful, happy experience for every student.
We’re not scared! We can’t wait for our next sensory adventures predictable and calm, we ensured that World Book Day was a meaningful, happy experience for every student.
